You’ve finally decided to take the plunge and get serious about horseback riding. You’ve already spent countless hours trying on equestrian helmets, shirts, breeches, riding jackets, gloves, and equestrian boots until you found the ones that looked and fit just right, and now you’re anxious to actually get on a horse.

That’s understandable, but jumping in the saddle without knowing proper riding techniques and etiquette puts you at risk of injuring yourself or others. Before venturing out on your own for any serious practice sessions, sacrifice some time to learn about English riding basics. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Take lessons from a certified trainer. The fastest way to become a competent rider is to take lessons from a knowledgeable professional. You will learn everything from how to tack up your horse properly to how to keep your equestrian boots planted firmly in the stirrups with your heels down so you don’t lose your balance.

Learn how to give your horse cues. There is more to safe riding than simply wearing ASTM/SEI approved equestrian helmets and proper apparel. You also need to be in control of the animal at all times, which means being able to issue crisp cues and commands that will be understood and obeyed immediately. A good trainer can get you started, and then lots of practice will help you develop the confidence necessary to execute your new skills with authority.

Pay attention to body positioning. English riding success begins with excellent body positioning. For instance, you must sit straight and tall in the saddle for better balance and control, and you should avoid leaning into turns. In addition, your ears, shoulders, hips, and the heels of your equestrian boots should all align with each other to ensure correct posture.

When you become comfortable enough to practice in a ring with others, make sure you follow these basic rules of English riding etiquette.

Always wear proper apparel. Obviously, protective equestrian helmets are a must, but you should also wear a fitted shirt, riding breeches, and tall equestrian boots when practicing. Loose clothing may chafe your skin or become tangled up in your equipment, which may then lead to serious injury. You don’t have to dress as formally for practice as you do for a show, but wearing proper apparel is a way of signaling your respect for the sport.

Go with the flow. There should be an obvious flow of traffic in the ring, with all horses and riders proceeding in the same direction. Use common sense and go with the flow rather than against it. Also, slower riders should stick towards the inside of the ring while leaving the outer portion to faster riders.

Maintain safe distances. To keep yourself and others out of harm’s way, try to maintain a distance of at least one horse length between riders.

Pass with care. If you must pass another rider, do so with extreme caution so as not to spook the horses. You should verbally communicate your intentions to the other rider before passing. If traffic is moving in two directions, be sure to pass left shoulder to left shoulder.

When sitting astride a half-ton bundle of muscle and energy, knowing some basic riding techniques and rules of etiquette can make the difference between having a productive practice session. To improve your chances of emerging from your outing unscathed, follow the above tips, always use approved equestrian helmets and apparel, and remember your training.

If you are not sure which type of horse tack you will need it is a good idea to speak to someone who is knowledgeable on the subject before you make any purchases. Your selection of bits and reins is also important. It is critical to keep in mind that different types of reins may work better with some horses than with others. Finding the right bit is particularly important when you purchase a horse that has limited riding experience. The Equestrian Corner uses only quality assured manufacturers for their products, so you can expect the best when you order from this retailer.

When you saddle up do you run a mental check list making sure all your safety equipment is in place? It’s important to remember the horse riding equipment to protect your horse as well. To keep your horse from cuts, scrapes and bruises, you must protect their legs. You should make sure that you are stocked up on protection equipment, such as bell boots, equine leg wraps, bandages, and splint boots. You want to keep your horse safe and lessen any chance of injury. It is also very important to check you saddle strap settings every time. If the doesn’t fit right it can cause the horse pain and over time, injury. Make sure the saddle fits and is comfortable for both you and the horse so it is doing more good than harm. You can find various styles of equestrian saddle pads to fit under the saddle to protect it from rubbing against the horse’s back. you can count on theequestriancorner.com for the horse tack and riding equipment you need.

A helmet is the single most important riding equipment for you when you are riding. Always buy a new helmet because an old helmet can be damaged and will not be as effective. You must also make sure that the helmet is ASTM/SEI certified. These certifications will make sure that the helmet was specially made for equestrian sports and that it has passed all the inspection and related tests. You can get a decent helmet for around $50 and it can be bought online or from a store. If you buy it from a store you will have the option of trying it on to see the comfort and size. If you know your size, buying online will save you time and gas money.

Buying the right horse equipment is one of the most important decisions you have to make if you are a rider. The right equipment can increase your riding experience and bad equipment can equally ruin your experience and be a threat to your safety as well. Riders often ignore the comfort and safety of the horse while choosing which equipment to buy. Our advice to you is to get equipment that is comfortable and safe for you and your horse. One of the very first things you would want to get is a saddle. Horse saddles are can be found in four styles: English, West, Asian and Military.
