But nothing ruins the prospect of a nice ride like a pest problem at the barn. The last thing you want to see as you approach your beloved animal is a host of flies, gnats, and mosquitos buzzing around. These pests are not merely a nuisance; they can also cause infection or serious illness due to parasites, bacteria, and diseases transmitted through bites. Moreover, injuries are a major concern as well, since horses often stomp or buck in an effort to escape the constant irritation.

Fortunately, pests are relatively easy to control if you have the right horse equipment for the job.  Fly sheets, masks, ear nets, and protective leg coverings are all effective and affordable ways of keeping your animal safe throughout the summer.

Fly sheets
Although standard turnout sheets can help guard against pests, many people prefer using fly sheets instead. Fly sheets are typically made of lightweight woven fabric to prevent flies and other insects from coming in contact with the horse’s body. They are breathable, durable, and cool enough for summertime use, and, unlike ordinary turnout sheets, may even be treated with a natural insect repellent for added protection. Some fly sheets also come with a neck cover and tail flap to provide maximum coverage.

Fly masks
The area around the eyes, nose, and mouth is particularly sensitive to insect bites, but of course regular turnout sheets don’t extend that far. This is why fly masks are one of the most important pieces of horse equipment you can buy to protect your animal. Fly masks cover the eyes and a good portion of the muzzle to create a comfortable barrier without impeding vision.  Masks scented with citronella are particularly effective at keeping pests at bay.

Ear nets and leg coverings
Most turnout sheets and fly sheets neglect the horse’s ears and legs, so many owners find it desirable to purchase separate ear nets and leg coverings to defend against pests at those extremities. Ear nets completely cover the ears to block out insects and the buzzing sounds they make, while leg coverings help prevent painful bites in the region from the knee to the coronet.

In addition to having the right horse equipment, routine maintenance in the tack room and hygienic practices regarding the storage and handling of feed can greatly limit the number of pests in the stable area. Bugs are particularly attracted to rot and mold, so cleanliness is a key component in the fight against pests.
